Pneumatic Retinopexy

Pneumatic Retinopexy is an in-office procedure used to repair certain types of retina detachments. It is a two-stage procedure usually performed at the same time. First, cryotherapy is performed to the retinal tear or hole that is responsible for the retinal detachment. Next, a gas bubble is injected inside the eye. The gas bubble helps to hold the retina in place and prevent eye fluid from tracking into the retinal defect. Similar to pars plana vitrectomy, head positioning is quite important to target the gas bubble over the retinal tear or hole while the cryotherapy seals the retina in place. Occasionally, instead of cryotherapy, laser photocoagulation, is used to seal the retinal defect within a few days following the injection of the gas bubble.
